Aufaitians @barcamp4

February 20th, 2009

Last week many Aufaitians had an opportunity to partake in 4th BarCamp at IIM Kozhikode , enjoying the beauty of Malabar. The event walked away with few memorable tips on mindmap using FreeMind, unconference, etc.

The session began with Kevin, 3rd year Engineering student, talking about their community/students organization called Campus Technologies which initiate inculcating the Blogging culture in Campuses. With attitude supported by high bass voice we could sense a future leader ‘in making’.

Followed by Bijith ( CEO - Aufait) presented the concepts of Web 2.0 in an interactive way. Well prepared one. Started with a very popular google video “Is machine us/ing Us”  triggering an interactive healthy discussion.

Web 2.0 … The Machine is Us/ing Us

Then the Brainstorming Session on the topic Innovation for the Bottom of Pyramid. Session started with Pavan explaining C.K Prahlad’s concept of Bottom of Pyramid and the discussion should be focused on Innovation for the Bottom of Pyramid. USP(Unique Selling Point) is tapping the mass at the bottom of the pyramid with the low marginal profit. Lot of successful projects with social value and involvement of the Bottom of the Pyramid came in to discussion such as ITC Choupal, Birla Shakthi, Grameen Micro Finance in Bangladesh, Amul, Dhabawallas in Mumbai etc. Really interesting Green Hat Thinking session. It was pleasure to see all aufaitians activeley involved in discussion and made sensible contribution to the session.

The afternoon session had a serious of presentation which summed up to a total of 4 Technical presentations.

  • Startups – Get Rich or Die Trying by Vishnu Gopal
  • 3D Game Development by Aneesh
  • Second Life by Sharath
  • Word Press by Anand

Also there was 4 Business Plans presented by IIMK students.

To conclude, though the camp was a good experience some of the restrictions due to tight packing of presentation had a break on its intention of ‘Unconference’. Also the topic which was supposed to be an IT based event, had deviated to many non IT subjects. Though it was very informative in one sense, I could sense the feelings of many techie enthus including me, who came fully charged for the IT related event were gloomy with the feeling of ‘Wipro hijacked their own (‘apunka’) barcamp’.
